I should have just waited! (Check out the previous blog post for the back story).
Anyway...
I ask myself, why did I not just wait a few more weeks and go to my normal guy.
Great question, was probably impatient, wanted it sorted, or just all of the above. Who knows.
Looking back, I clearly made a bad decision. Not only did I get sh*t service, but I didn't even get my bumper issue sorted.
I can guarantee you one thing, I'll never go back to this mechanic, and I sure as hell won't be recommending him to anyone. Imagine the potential opportunities for new business if he had just given me a good experience.
Now onto a completely different experience.
There's this mechanic that I've been using for 15+ years. Take all my cars to him, knows me by name, doesn't take me for a ride, has never let me down.
Why I mention this is because whatever he's done has secured him numerous new clients just from me.
Take all my cars there, my dad goes there, mum, sister, brother, sister in law, even mates who ask me for someone, I send them to this guy.
I can only imagine between myself and my whole family, he'd make something like 20-30k a year from all of us easy.
On a side note, I'm probably there ever 2 months for something. I own a 30 year old car with 350k on it. Let's just say she likes being at the mechanic."
So what's the difference? Why does this guy make thousands from me and I recommend him to every man and his dog that I know.
I'll tell you why. The man has, no word of a lie, in 15+ years, NEVER, EVER, given me a poor experience.
And Not even ONCE has he ever turned me away with some BS excuse.
Never! (This time was my choice to go elsewhere).
No matter how busy he is, he always finds a way to accomodate me. There have been times where he's said:
"Look we're super busy today but I might get time at the end of the day to look, leave it here, if I can, I'll take a look, otherwise I'll look first thing in the morning, and give you a call."
My response is something like "sure, that's fine, thank you, keep it has many days as you need, just appreciate you making space."
And guess what, sure enough, what do I get in the morning... a call.
Someone that sticks to their word, that's a rarity these days!
Now tell me if you would stop going to a guy that gives you this type of service... (and trust me, I've made some insane requests of this man over the years, always my fault for leaving things to the week before a trip and realise I need work done).
So moral of the story.
Check if your business is sending customers away in some way, shape or form. Because that 1 person who has a bad experience or you turn away might be the gateway to thousands of dollars in new business.
It can easily happen to any of us and it's one of the easiest ways to kill your business. Don't plug those gaping holes in the bucket and I guarantee it'll be empty before you know it.
